Common Concepts LLC
is an interdisciplinary, collaborative design studio specializing in residential and commercial design, and experiential installations, based in New York City. Founded to explore the intersection of design, technology, and sustainability, the studio seeks to develop elegant, integrative design solutions focused on satisfying end-user experiences. With an emphasis on programmatic analysis, design theory, strategic spatial planning, & brand development, we believe successful projects are context-driven, and the result of open collaboration with our clients, consultants, and craftspeople across varied disciplines.


Jonathan Lloyd Smith / Owner
is a New York City-based designer. He received degrees in architecture and fine arts from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Jon has worked on a diverse array of projects in architecture, interior design, documentary film, event production, and marketing. Prior to founding Common Concepts LLC, Jon honed his branding expertise while working in the architectural sector for a variety of high-end residential and commercial clients including: Johnson & Johnson, J. Crew, Barneys NY, Tiffany & Co., and Brooklyn Brewery. As Creative Director of Olivier Cheng Catering & Events, he oversaw event production for a roster of exclusive clientele in the beauty, food, media, entertainment, and consumer product industries, including Coty, Kao Brands, Eileen Fisher, Martha Stewart Omnimedia, Samsung, & Dom Perignon. Jon teaches at Parsons School of Design, and he has served as guest critic at Parsons, Pratt Institute, and RISD.

Ellen Klein / Smith & Klein
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Ellen Klein is an innovative New York City based Designer with a diverse background. She has over ten years experience in the design of furniture, home products, interior, environmental and pop-up design and is passionate about making good design accessible to all.

 

Maya Maxwell RA / ADAPT Collaborative
Maya Maxwell is a registered architect and experienced project manager whose work is informed by her prior training in art and her passion for problem-solving. Since graduating from The Cooper Union in 2005, Maya has taken on a vast range of complex projects including residential developments, home renovations, educational facilities, retail spaces, offices and hospitality work. She maintains a proven track record of delivering elegant and functional spaces to private clients, developers and institutions.
